Market Research Overview, May 2003

Previous Month Next Month

7th 14th 21st 28th

Products

  • The big news this month was IBM's release of DB2 Information Integrator - causing a flurry of announcements from partners/rivals like Ascential and Striva.
  • Tibco combined with HP (for BPM) and Gemstone (for ESS - Enterprise Services Solution)
  • Vitria launches the "Telecom Process Accelerator" - a kind of vertically focused ESB

Industry

  • Gartner raised plenty of hackles by reporting IBM now leading in 6 separate integration segments - overtaking BEA in app servers, for example. Several commentators asked when these technology analysts would get the same treatment recently meted out to investment analysts...
  • Standards - which standards? The ongoing tension between OASIS (sponsoring BPEL) and W3C (looking after Choreography) continued to entertain. Where will it end? Can Sun and Oracle really act as disinterested peacemakers? Watch this space.
  • Results are still all over the place; Iona downsized by 30% and lost its CEO and COO; Insevo and Taviz merge in an attempt to preserve at least something from the two companies; meanwhile Data Mirror dampened Q1 expectations, and Attunity masked a 25% drop in license revenues with an increase in maintenance and services.
  • But there's still money out there; BPMI founder Intalio managed to raise $5M, while Systinet sees a 50% sequential growth in sales.
